Transylvania County is known for its waterfalls and bike trails, but did you know it is also home to some of the largest granite domes in the Eastern U.S.? Folks come from far away to walk right by those waterfalls in search of an adventure on the pristine granite and unusual eyebrow-slab climbing these domes offer.
Looking Glass is probably the most famous of the climbing areas. It presents a variety of eyebrows, cracks and face holds, which makes the climbing fairly diverse and keeps folks coming back for years. Cedar Rock and John Rock feature similar styles of climbing found on the various faces of Looking Glass, but accessing them requires a little more hiking and adventure.
There is great climbing for beginners in most of the areas, but very few climbs can be set up from the top, so leading the route is necessary. Lead climbing requires more skill and safety measures, and it is highly recommended that you get proper instruction before taking this on.
