Laurel Mountain, Pilot Rock, Squirrel Gap

Laurel Mountain, Pilot Rock, Squirrel Gap

Approximately 25 miles
5+ hrs

The classic Pisgah mountain bike ride. A tour of all the single-track that you’ve read about, this loop could take 5 to 7 hours and is considered very difficult. Single-track climbs, switchback descents and beautiful hand cut trail is what has put Brevard on the map as a destination.

Note: Access to this ride is found at the Turkey Pen trailhead on Turkey Pen Rd., off NC 280 (Asheville Highway) at the Henderson and Transylvania County line. You may need to park at the bottom of the road; it is rough and may be impassable for cars with low clearance.

•From Turkey Pen parking lot, head to the left of the trail kiosk
•Make a left over the swinging bridge
•Left on S Mills River Trail
•Right on Mullinax Trail
•At camping area after the switchbacks, turn right onto Squirrel Gap Trail and head downhill to the river
•Left on Bradley Creek Trail (look for yellow blaze)
•Go through a few creek crossings: eventually you will come to a field on your right
•Right on Bradley Creek Rd (FS 5015) and follow this road uphill
•Left at gate on Yellow Gap Rd (FS 1206)
•Right on Laurel Mountain Trail in about 50 yards; continue uphill for 7-miles (an hour or more)
•Left at unmarked fork in trail
•Left at intersection with Pilot Rock Trail
•Left on Pilot Rock Trail and follow downhill
•Right on FS 1206
•Left on FS 476 and stay straight onto S. Mills River Trail until you reach the swinging bridge
•Make a left on Squirrel Gap Trail after the bridge
•Stay on Squirrel Gap Trail until you again reach the intersection with Mullinax Trail
•Stay straight on Mullinax Trail
•Hard right on S Mills River Trail
•Cross swinging bridge again
•Turn right after bridge, climb back to parking lot
